September 19, 2013 Minutes

Mike Keeler opened the meeting at 7:00pm and reviewed the agenda.

Darren Bagley from MSU Extension talked about the programs and role of MSU extension including the master gardening program, Edible Flint, 4H youth development, food and nutrition programs – Project Fresh. There is a millage that would fund some of these programs up for approval in November, it is .04 mils.

Alex Harris, running for Flint City Council addressed the group.

John Cherry read the minutes. Motion to approve the minutes was accepted and approved, with one correction.

Suzi Davidek submitted the Treasurer’s report. Motion to approve the treasurer’s report was accepted and approved.

MCC – Mike Kelly

  • There was a big wind storm over the summer that pulled part of the roof off which is why we are meeting in a different room, it will be repaired soon
  • MCC is working to get students to enter off of Longway Blvd.
  • 10,000 Students
  • Mott College is on the November ballot for the renewal of the bonding authority which can only be used for capital expenditures

 

Storm Water Runoff – Jack Minore

  • Discussed reduction of preventing water pollution that would go into the Great Lakes
  • Washing the car on the lawn, fertilizing sparingly, cleaning up pet waste, water the lawn sparingly, carefully store household cleaners, chemicals, and oils, keep storm drains clean, don’t flush medications down the drain, and utilize earth friendly landscaping

 

Real Estate Report – Suzi Davidek

  • Seeing less foreclosures
  • More homes selling at fair-market value
  • Still has a good number of clients who have a high interest in moving into the neighborhood

 

Marketing Committee – Stef Diana

  • We are close to a final version – the close to final version was passed around
  • Working with Olmsted Associates
  • Worked with a committee, and photographs were all done by Paul Rozyki
  • Cost of brochure is covered due to MCC generously covering the cost of the printing
  • Looking for HR Department contacts for distribution
  • Reviewed what kind of website changes we are looking for

East Village Ads

  • Sherry Hayden motioned to continue East Village Ads for the next year using the same format as previous. Total cost would be $555.75. Motion was seconded and approved unanimously

 

Master Plan – Kevin Schronce

  • City has been engaged in the Master Plan process since 2011. We have 25 days left on the 63 day comment period.
  • The plan is meant to be a community plan, so it is not just the City government that would be implementing
  •  The Master Plan draft envisions the neighborhood as remaining traditional single family residential

 

Neighborhood Watch – Mike Herriman

  • Showed a video of individuals who were rummaging through a car and demonstrated how they enter through the back yard to avoid the motion lights and how they appear not-suspicious in their clothing and grooming
  • Asked for more people to join the patrol program
  • If you see something you should first call 911, then Mott Police, then your block captain

 

Blight – Raul Garcia

  • Took a new position working on blight in the City
  • His number is 766-7284 ext 2733
  • Please call him to report blight issues (abandoned vehicles, issues with vacant houses, grass, etc.)

Announcements

  • Do not put any plastic bags in the recycling, the place that processes them cannot handle it
  • Friends of the Flint River Trail/Sierra Club Walk, 10am Wednesday morning
  • Don’t rake your leaves to the street this year
  • Annual Riegel awards will be presented and one of the recipients will be Kay Kelly
  • Kiva Flint Director will be speaking at a Flint Club event at Hoffman’s Deli 27th of September

27th and 28th of September the Michigan Neighborhood Association will have its convention at St. Paul’s Episcopal
