November 21, 2013 Minutes

Mike Keeler opened the meeting at 7:05 and reviewed the agenda

  • Put in a grant application with community foundation for four different projects in the neighborhood

John Cherry read the minutes. Motion to approve the minutes was accepted and approved, with one correction.

There was no treasurer’s report due to reconciling needing to occur

Mark Fisher – Real Estate Report

  • 2012 46 houses sold at this time, 2013 50 houses sold at this time.
  •  4.3% increase in home prices ($31,868 2012, $33,300 2013)
  • 44 active homes for sale 17 pending last year at this time, now 33 active homes for sale and 10 pending, that is good, lower supply increases prices.
  • Reduction in percentage of distressed sales.

 

Crim Fitness Foundation – Jennifer Burger

  • The Foundation wants to assist in the development of Flint parks
  • Wants to start with Pierce Park as we have a strong neighborhood association
  • Also trying to assist in implementing the City Master Plan
  • Looking at potential programing for Pierce or potential a 5k in the Park during the spring

Monica Galloway – New City Councilwoman for our neighborhood

  • Goal is to work closely with emergency manager so that when the transition to local control happens, it will be a smooth transition
  • Discussed her personal history, family, and background and answered questions

Senator Jim Ananich

  • Provided updates on the federal grant that is being used to demolish homes
  • His bill on scrap metal theft passed the House and hearings are starting in the Senate
  • Working on some violent crime bills and economic redevelopment bills – looking at expanding the model that is being pioneered in Flint with St. Luke’s

 

Representative Phelps

  • Has been sworn in and the office is open for calls and assistance
  • Having a town hall on Dec. 13 6:30 – 8:00pm on the Affordable Care Act at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mt. Morris

Questions to legislators followed

 

Mike Herriman, neighborhood watch

  • Had several B&Es and the suspect was caught on video and patrolers were able to recover some of the items, a suspect has been arrested due to other offences in the city
  • Encouraged more people in the neighborhood to put up cameras
  • Craig has been working with Neighborhoods United and they are trying to work with liquor store owners to address crime issues
  • Mini-station is shutting down over the winter

 

Stef Diana – Marketing Committee

  • Thanked everyone for the donations to produce the brochure and donated time
  •  Currently it is distributed to MCC HR, Piper Reality, Grant Hamady Realty, HR Department of Ruth Mott, soon to be at ROWE engineering, working at UofM Flint, Bar Association, Baker, Hurley, Diplomat Pharmacy, Flint and Genesee Chamber
  • Next step is to improve the website
  • Realtors are already having a positive response from the brochures, excited about the website

Newspapers on the lawn

  • Having issues with journal non-subscription papers being put on the parkway
  • Motion made to write a letter from the neighborhood association to the journal asking for them to cease delivery of non-subscription papers
  • Motion passed

Flint Farmer’s Market – Dick Ramsdell

  • Discussed the changes in the design of the new Farmer’s Market to accommodate new parking
  • Discussed the internal layout of the new market
  • There will be a second floor that can support additional businesses
  • Discussed the community space
  • Tuesday and Thursday hours will be extended to 6pm

 

Announcements

  • New playground equipment provided to Woodlawn Park,
  • Bridge over Gilkey Creek near Crapo is going to need repairs
  • Homeowners are responsible for now for repairing sidewalks, should work with city to develop ways to be able to finance repairs
  • Leaf pickup needs better advertisement
